Marcela Vargas, a Colombian-born artist, of Spanish heritage, and with more than 20 years living and traveling across Europe and the Americas; has a natural energy, passion and curiosity thanks to her heritage and background which inspires her art and its development.

 

Vargas’ increasingly abstract work, presents a stylish, modern aesthetic while embracing the soul and vibrant spirit of her heritage and travels.

 

Her paintings and mixed media pieces, using acrylics, are developed in rich layers and textures. Wood panels are a preferred base as she can more vigorously create multi-layers of acrylics and collages with bolder brushstrokes and stronger palette knife applications. This creates compositions with energy and movement.

 

On close inspection, her work often reveals elements of collaged imagery, photography, textiles and paper. Dramatic shapes, landscapes, and urban environments feature frequently; allowing her to explore a wide and often vibrant palette.

 

Growing up in city of the ‘eternal spring’ Medellin, has given her an exceptional appreciation of the importance of the life-cycle of nature. Vargas can confidently flirt between using bright, vivid colors of the warmer seasons of Colombia, Florida or the Mediterranean; and the deep and atmospheric tones depicting crisp winters and rich autumn hues from Europe. Seeing how landscapes evolve and are reborn with each season is a phenomenon that fascinates and inspires her.

 

There has always been a love affair between fashion and art. And while typically fashion is influenced by art, Vargas is fascinated about how fashion can be the inspiration. Her compositions echo spirited styles, from the exotic to the futuristic - of Paris, Madrid or Miami. She is curious by different cultural and social references and is intrigued by bursts of color, movement, structures and textiles in fashion.  She plays with these elements in creating passionate, timeless and modern pieces that engage the audience.
